General

Recreational Team: No experience needed! We welcome complete beginners and will teach you everything you need to know.

Competitive Team: You should have some climbing experience and be confident on a rope and in a harness. If you're newer to climbing, we recommend starting with the rec team to build your skills.

Yes, you must be a currently enrolled UVU student to join either team. This includes part-time students.

Rec Team: Casual, open to all skill levels. Focus on having fun, improving your climbing, gym discount, and outdoor trips. No competition required.

Comp Team: For serious climbers who want to compete at USA Climbing collegiate events. Requires consistent practice attendance, tryouts, and travel for competitions.

Costs & Dues

Dues for 2026-27 are up to $150 a year for the Rec Team and up to $300 a year for the Comp Team.

Those are ceilings, not final bills. We're actively fundraising and taking donations, and the more that comes in the lower they go. We'll confirm the final number before the season starts, and it will only ever move down from here.

The gym discount savings usually cover a good portion of the cost.

Rec Team dues cover: Access to weekly practices, outdoor trips, team events, and gym discount partnerships.

Comp Team dues cover: Everything in rec team plus competition entry fees (partial), travel coordination, and team gear.

Dues do not cover USA Climbing membership. That is about $65 a year, paid straight to USA Climbing. It is a separate expense you pay yourself, and you need it in order to compete.

We work to offset costs through sponsorships and fundraising. If cost is a barrier, please reach out to us at [email protected]. We want climbing to be accessible to everyone.

Practices & Events

Practices start Monday, September 28, twice a week in the evening.

Bouldering: Wednesday at 6:30 PM at Momentum Lehi.
Ropes: Monday at 7:00 PM. The rope gym rotates week to week, and our first one is at Momentum Fort Union.

We confirm each rope location ahead of time, so check our calendar and the team group chat.

Rec Team: No, attendance is flexible. Come when you can!

Comp Team: Regular attendance is expected. We understand school and work come first, but consistent training is important for competition readiness.

We organize both day trips (when the weather permits) to local areas within an hour of campus, and longer trips during school breaks to destinations like Joe's Valley, Moe's Valley, Red Rocks, and more. Transportation is coordinated via carpooling, and housing is arranged for overnight trips.

Competitions

Tryouts are over for this season. Fall 2026 tryouts were held Tuesday, September 1 and Wednesday, September 2, from 6 to 8 PM, and both nights sold out. Our team info meeting is done too, and practices start Monday, September 28. If you missed all of that and still want to join, you have not missed your chance. Send us a message! [email protected] For reference, here is how tryouts ran. You only need to come to one of the two nights. There is a one time $30 fee and space is limited to 25 people per night. The $30 was a tryout fee only, not team dues.

Tryouts are at the UVU climbing wall (The Project) and involve four routes: two top rope and two lead.

You don't need to be lead certified to try out. If you're not certified, you'll just climb the two top rope routes. If you'd like to do the lead routes too, The Project runs a learn-to-lead clinic once a month and spots are limited, so sign up early.

Mostly, tryouts are how we get to know you and figure out whether the Comp Team or Rec Team is the better fit.

We compete in USA Climbing Collegiate Series events, including regional qualifiers (October–March), nationals qualifiers (March–April), and the Collegiate National Championships (May). We aim to attend as many events as possible based on budget and team interest.

You'll need climbing shoes. You can borrow harnesses and other gear for practices. For competitions you will need your own harness. For outdoor trips, we can help coordinate gear sharing and rentals.
