Rec Team
Climbing for the love of it, with people who will teach you. If you have never touched a wall, this is where you start.
- Practices: weekly, at gyms around the valley. Attendance is flexible.
- Outdoor trips: day trips and multi day trips over breaks, to places like Joe's Valley, Moe's Valley and American Fork Canyon. We sort carpools and housing.
- Perks: gym discount, team events, and a group of friends who climb.
- Best if: you want to get better and have fun, without a competition schedule.
Comp Team
Train with a coach and represent UVU at USA Climbing collegiate events. You do not have to be an elite climber, you have to want to compete.
- Practices: structured training sessions with a coach, and skill clinics on technique, strength and the mental side.
- Season: qualifying events through the fall and winter, nationals qualifiers in the spring, and Collegiate Nationals in May.
- Travel: we coordinate lodging and transport to competitions.
- Also included: every Rec team event and outdoor trip.
- Best if: you want a season with a goal at the end of it.
What it costs
Dues for 2026-27 are up to $150 a year for Rec and up to $300 a year for Comp. Those are ceilings, not final bills. We are actively fundraising and taking donations, and the more that comes in the lower they go. We will confirm the final numbers before the season starts, and they will only ever move down from here.
What to budget for:
- Rec Team dues: up to $150 for the year
- Comp Team dues: up to $300 for the year
- USA Climbing membership (Comp only): $65 a year, paid straight to USA Climbing. Team dues do not cover this. It is a separate expense and you cannot compete without it.
- Competition entry fees and travel (Comp only): varies by event
We fundraise and chase sponsorships to offset as much of this as we can, and in past seasons we have helped with some costs. We cannot promise reimbursement in advance. What we can cover depends on how fundraising goes. The gym discount alone tends to pay for a good chunk of membership.
One thing to know before you pick
Once you sign up and pay for a team, you stay on that team for the season. We order gear in set amounts and our numbers lock in ahead of the season, so we cannot move people afterwards.
That is exactly why we do not ask you to decide early. Talk to an officer, ask us anything, and pick when you sign up.
Still not sure?
Good. That is the normal place to be, and you are not supposed to have it worked out yet.
- Come to a practice and see both. Mondays are ropes, Wednesdays are bouldering, starting September 28.
- Ask an officer there. That is what we are there for, and you can talk to people from both teams before you commit.
- You pick when you sign up, not before. Nothing is locked in until you pay for a team.
If you would rather ask now, email [email protected].
Support the Team
Dues are a ceiling, not a fixed price. Every dollar we raise lowers what our climbers actually pay, on both teams.
We fundraise, chase sponsors and take donations, and it all comes off what our members pay. If you have family or friends who would back a student team, passing the link on is the most useful thing you can do.
Still want to join? The season has started, but we would rather hear from you than not. Email [email protected]
On the Comp team you also need a USA Climbing membership, which dues do not cover. There is a full walkthrough at utahvalleyclimbing.com/usac-signup.
